When the Heart Speaks but the Lips Stay Silent…

I couldn’t open up to him.. 12-07-25 Saturday

I wanted to. I really did. I sat there, words heavy on the edge of my tongue, but something held me back. A quiet voice within whispered, “Don’t.” Maybe it was fear, or maybe it was a subtle knowing… that it wasn’t the same from his side. That he didn’t feel what I was feeling. That while my heart was skipping beats, his was steady kind, present, but untouched.

After five long years of healing, of learning to breathe again after my last heartbreak, I stepped out with someone new. It felt like a date to me — butterflies in my stomach, rehearsed lines in my head, and the tiniest hope in my chest. But to him, it was just a work meeting. A casual catch-up.

I had planned to say it to confess that I feel something more, to ask him if we could give “us” a chance. But before I could speak, he unknowingly gave me the answer I wasn’t ready to hear. A soft but clear hint that what we shared was friendship nothing more, nothing less.

And I respect that.
Truly, I do.

Because I don’t want to lose him not even as a friend. He’s the only one in all these years who made me feel safe. Who made me feel seen. And while I might have silently stitched hopes around us, he stood there with grace — grounded, calm, not once making me feel ashamed for feeling something more.

Today, I spoke a lot. Maybe too much. I reacted. I broke a little inside. Not because of rejection, but because I realised this road I started walking leads to a place I’ll have to stand alone.

And that hurts.

It’s hard to shut off feelings that took five years to feel again. I don’t fall often. I don’t open up easily. But with him, something was different. For the first time in a long time, I felt like I belonged. Like I could call someone “home” again.

But homes aren’t always meant to be lived in.

He doesn’t know what I feel. Or maybe he does. Maybe his silence was his way of gently letting me down without hurting me. And if that’s the case, I’m thankful. For his maturity, his kindness, his presence that didn’t make me feel silly or wrong.

Still, it hurts to realise that I’m falling for someone who doesn’t feel the same. That I care deeply for someone who only ever saw me as a friend. And that any step forward could risk the only thing we actually have our bond.

It’s complicated. Messy. Emotionally exhausting.

I find myself trying to act normal around him, to not let my eyes or my words betray what’s bubbling underneath. I don’t want him to feel uncomfortable. I don’t want to scare him away. I just… wish it didn’t feel so heavy inside.

I know I need to take a step back. Not because I want to, but because I have to. I have to protect what we have. I have to protect me.

There’s something about him I’m endlessly drawn to. And that’s exactly why I must walk away from that feeling before it consumes me.

Because sometimes, the most painful act of love is not holding on… it’s letting go.

I just hope I find the strength to carry this silently. To hold onto the friendship without letting my heart ruin it. To let this beautiful, unspoken love dissolve into something quiet… something mine.

Whatever happens, I’m choosing grace.

Even if it breaks me a little.
Even if he never knows.
Even if all I ever get to be…
is his friend..
