There are some decisions in life that leave a permanent mark on your soul the kind that you wish you could undo, rewind, or rewrite. One such decision still haunts me deeply. It wasn’t about a job, a relationship, or a missed opportunity it was about a soul, a life, a little being who trusted me unconditionally: Snow.
I still remember the day we saw him a dog who had been beaten, abandoned, and thrown out like he never mattered. My mother brought him home from the street, and I swear the moment he entered, there was light, warmth, and something so pure that it filled our space with life. He didn’t ask for anything. Just a little care, some love, and maybe a place where he wouldn’t be hurt again.
But life has its own realities. We already had two cats and a dog at home, and our hectic work schedules made it hard to give him the undivided attention he deserved. Our other pets weren’t ready to accept him, and in that emotional chaos, I made the hardest decision of my life to find him a forever home.
After a week of searching, a close friend offered to adopt him. She promised to raise him like her own child, to never let him feel abandoned again. Her words gave me hope, and my heart, though heavy, was convinced this was the right thing to do for him.
The day I handed Snow over, I didn’t just give her a dog I gave her a part of myself. His eyes… I can never forget those eyes. He didn’t resist, but they held questions, confusion, and pain. It felt like betrayal, even though I was doing what I believed was best for him.
But promises don’t hold the same weight in everyone’s heart. A few months later, I found out that Snow was again passed on to someone else. My heart sank. I felt helpless. Angry. Betrayed.
What hurts most is not just losing him it’s knowing I handed him over to someone who didn’t value the depth of their own word. When he was with my friend, I could still be a part of his life visit, care, make sure he was okay. Now, I don’t even know if he’s safe, happy, or loved.
It breaks me. Because animals trust us with everything they have and we, as humans, often don’t deserve that kind of love. I keep replaying the moment I lifted him for the last time, kissed his forehead, and placed him in her arms. I saw fear in his eyes, the fear of being left again. And I did just that. I left him.
I’ve always tried to live with kindness and empathy, but this one decision makes me question if I’m a good person at all. Snow, I failed you and I carry that burden every day.
I pray, with everything I have, that your new home is kind to you. That they see your soul like I did. That they never raise a hand on you, or a voice. I pray they hold you when you’re scared, feed you when you’re hungry, and love you like you’ve never been loved before.
I hope one day you forgive me. I couldn’t protect you the way you deserved to be protected. But I will never stop praying for your peace, for your safety, for your joy.
I love you, Snow.
Always.
Forever.
Even from a distance you may never understand.
And I will never forgive myself.
But I’ll keep loving you in silence, with prayers on my lips and hope in my heart.
