The Little Things That Still Make Me Smile

Sometimes, you can admire someone even when you know they are no longer meant to be a part of your life in the way you once imagined.

We were exploring each other. There was something between us, and for reasons of our own, it didn’t work out. Today, we are still part of the same group of six friends. We meet, we talk, we laugh, and life has moved on.

But there is one thing about him that I still genuinely admire.

He respects boundaries.

Not just the big, obvious ones. The tiny, almost invisible ones that most people don’t even think about.

There are little things he used to do for me that he still does, even now. He won’t casually share his drink with someone else. He won’t open a can for someone else. He won’t put someone else’s seat belt on. He doesn’t intentionally do things in front of me that he knows might hurt me.

And no, I don’t take these things as a sign that he still wants me. I don’t think he is secretly waiting for me, and I don’t want to give these gestures a meaning they may not have.

I simply notice them.

Because people say a lot of things when they’re getting to know you. They promise certain things, behave a certain way, and sometimes, once the relationship changes, all of it disappears.

But with him, somehow, the little things stayed.

And that’s beautiful.

I know I still have a soft corner for him. I’m not going to pretend I don’t. And I’m sure he knows that too. So the fact that he is mindful of my feelings, without making a big deal out of it, means something to me.

It’s not about possession. It’s not about expecting him to behave a certain way forever.

It’s about respect.

And honestly, it makes me smile.

Sometimes I look at him and think, whoever ends up with this man someday is going to be really lucky.

Because beneath everything that went wrong between us, there is a genuinely good person there. Someone who remembers the little things. Someone who doesn’t deliberately hurt people just because circumstances have changed. Someone who understands that kindness doesn’t have an expiry date just because a relationship does.

Maybe that’s the green flag I admire the most.

And to the guys reading this: take notes.

You don’t always have to make grand gestures to make someone feel valued. Sometimes it’s as simple as remembering what makes them comfortable, respecting what might hurt them, and continuing to be considerate even when you no longer have to be.

Those little things say a lot about who you are.

And sometimes, even when someone isn’t yours anymore, you can still look at them and think—

“You’re a really good human. And I’m glad I got to know that side of you.”
